The City is one of the cheapest new scoots you can buy (officially) in the UK that includes a full helmet bay. It features Honda-style trailing link forks (and handles well as a result), but is a physically small machine, so tall riders may find it cramped. The ultra small front disc brake is a bit weedy, but the quality seems good and you can’t moan about the price.

A fine looking cheapie from Sym that’s looks and feels sturdy enough to last the pace. Based on their old Shark scoot the Euro MX also features a rim-mounted front disc brake. It’s basic but it has everything from helmet bay to curry hook, and suggests great VFM for the commuter wanting a 125 for less than two grand. Tested T&G 18.

Sym’s first venture into the large wheeled scooter market, and a stylish one at that. Powered by their Joyride engine expect reliability coupled with performance. Acceleration is brisk and handling is nimble. Worth a second look if you’re in the market for a hi-wheeler.

The smart-looking SYM Shark brings the Taiwanese manufacturer 125 offerings up to date in technology terms. The four-stroke engine boasts reasonable performance. The flashy rim-mounted disc brake works fine, as well as looking trick. A rear disc brake (Shark 125R) has been added. With a flat floor and fair sized helmet bay the Shark is practical enough. Tested T&G 4.

Same spec. as their 125 but with the 180 motor from the Joyride. Due to the lighter chasis expect acceleration to be very good with an impressive top speed. Twin shocks help to make the longer journeys bearable. Ideal for those with a longer commute on more open roads. Tested T&G 32.

Sym’s Joyride was re-badged as a Laverda by Aprilia to relaunch the famous Italian brand in its home nation, so it should be and indeed is a good bit of kit. Praised by all members of T&G staff who have so far ridden it, features include twin adjustable rear shocks, centre and side stands, back rest, 40-litre underseat storage and alloy wheels. The motor is a 180cc four-valve four-stroke liquid-cooled engine that claims 14.5bhp (approx), and braking is courtesy of a rim mounted front disc combined with an traditional rear. A well spec’d scoot at a competitive price that should put a few major companies to shame. Tested T&G 13.

China’s Taishan Sport boasts drum brakes at either end which are adequate yet not exceptional, and a four-stroke engine to keep the Eurocrats happy. Not a sports scooter, even if you do squint, but it does have a 12 month warranty and the promise of frugal petrol consumption. Preview T&G 15.

The Taishan Commuter from China is based on an old Honda scooter, has 10in tyres and a new four-stroke engine to help it meet EU regulations. The overall size of this machine, and use of drum brakes for stopping power suggest it’s better suited to smaller ladies than big boys. With a 12 month warranty it’s a cheap option for those penny pinchers out there. Preview T&G 15
