The 50cc Scarabeo has been a massive hit in its home country for Aprilia, the 100cc machine will no doubt follow. Only a limited number of these machines are planned for the UK market. This 100cc scoot should prove a light, nippy alternative to those that dislike the sportier models with smaller wheels. Aprilia’s usual two year warranty, and TPF&T Insurance deal (for a limited period)

The Atlantic 125 shares name and similar design cues with its 500cc brother, but is a different beast. Powered by a Piaggio Leader motor the down scaled scoot looks cuter than the original, space under the seat for one and half lids, adjustable pre-load rear suspension, and three linked disc brakes for stability.

The new Sprint version may not be as roomy as its predecessor but its enhanced urban ability more than compensates. For my money this is the most stylish and enjoyable application of a 460cc Master engine for inter-urban use so far. Priced at £4349 the Sprint rates as one of the cheaper maxi-scooters and is targeted head-to-head with Piaggio’s X9 500. While the Sprint may not have as many gadgets as the Piaggio, it is the more rewarding ride. Reviewed TAG May 2005 Issue 39

Why do we think this moped is good value? Well this is one of the greenest and technologically advanced moped you can currently buy, and yet it still looks great, handles well and will stop on a sixpence. You should start saving money straight away as the fuel injected DITECH motor uses considerably less fuel and two-stroke oil than a conventional 50cc engine, and with major environmental benefits.
The DITECH engine is the first scooter motor that Aprilia have built themselves, but a one-year warranty means that shouldn’t worry you. Our only reservation is that full de-restriction is a task for the dealer only. TPF&T insurance currently available at just £99. (Tested T&G 6)

A sophisticated four stroke learner legal scooter from Italy. High tech features abound, such as twin rear shocks and a water-cooled four-valve engine, but still the performance isn't up to the standard of a two-stroke. Big underseat compartment, good build quality and economical running go some way toward making up the deficit. The price could be cheaper but it includes a two year warranty. Aprilia squeezed a bigger motor into their smart-but-sluggish Leonardo 125, and created a more gutsy machine that is useful for open road aswell as townwork. The upright seating position of the Leonardo is preferable if you do much heavy traffic work, but on the down-side, the underseat storage compartment will only take one full-face helmet. Aprilia offer a two year warranty in the price. Various insurance deals subject to status, check details with local stockist. Tested T&G 3.

Cheap little moped from Bajaj in India. The parent company of this little plastic shrouded machine is better known for the manufacture of the Vespa clone that dominates their home-market. The Spirit boasts a two-speed auto engine, lightweight body and styling more akin to modern autos, and electric start. One of the cheapest new scoots available in the UK.

The Classic SL by Bajaj Auto of India has slowly evolved from the Italian Vespa that was produced by them under licence. Whilst not as elegant or sophisticated as its European counterpart, this is reflected in the price. Auto lube and electric start do however both feature on the new Classic. Cheap and cheerful scootering, although decent tyres would improve it further.

The Ark is a nice scooter and this cheaper version certainly is too. Powered by an air-cooled Minarelli engine. It has a 50mph top speed when de-restricted, but suffers in terms of practicality by having too small a helmet compartment. Quality components abound, a two year warranty, and a fairly competitive price mean that Noah shouldn’t be the only person you know with an Ark.
