This rather sporty looking ped comes to the UK from CPI in Taiwan. They are dangling a year’s TPF&T insurance for £99 with new CPI scooters in an attempt to win your cash, and if Oliver’s army are interested then the exhaust is made of stainless steel. Nice touch. Two year warranty.

China’s Taishan Sport boasts drum brakes at either end which are adequate yet not exceptional, and a four-stroke engine to keep the Eurocrats happy. Not a sports scooter, even if you do squint, but it does have a 12 month warranty and the promise of frugal petrol consumption. Preview T&G 15.

An average ’ped, but then that’s reflected in the price of this offering from CPI in Taiwan. In the UK via CPI Moto it boasts the same moped motor as the rest of the range, but has the incentive of a year’s TPF&T insurance for just £99 to try and lure you away from some of the more aesthetically pleasing budget autos from Europe. Time to get your calculator out I feel.

The Taishan Commuter from China is based on an old Honda scooter, has 10in tyres and a new four-stroke engine to help it meet EU regulations. The overall size of this machine, and use of drum brakes for stopping power suggest it’s better suited to smaller ladies than big boys. Previously known as the SKP the Gilera Stalker is a good all rounder produced by Piaggio, loosely based around the Typhoon. It goes well once de-restricted. Good VFM, for a sporty looking scooter with a two year warranty. Subsidised insyrance available until April. Tested T&G 17.

This is the machine that set the scooter boom off for Malaguti. Now relegated to a base model it features a disc brake, 10in wheels and a Minarelli engine, making it a reasonable proposition. A more accessible seat height than some. two year warranty and one year’s roadside assistance help to make this a good value for money.
