If you were cruel you could say that this is Kymco’s first really nice looking scooter. Uses Kymco’s liquid-cooled four-stroke, but has to pull 128kg so performance is relaxed rather than sporty. A large, comfortable machine with good spec and fine handling. Down-sides: tight helmet bay and mediocre price. Upside: 0%, 2 year finance package.

The smart-looking SYM Shark brings the Taiwanese manufacturer 125 offerings up to date in technology terms. The four-stroke engine boasts reasonable performance. The flashy rim-mounted disc brake works fine, as well as looking trick. A rear disc brake (Shark 125R) has been added. With a flat floor and fair sized helmet bay the Shark is practical enough. MBK’s feet-forward luxury 125 shares everything but its name with Yamaha’s Majesty 125. Despite the scooter’s length, weight, and seat height, it is still very manoeuvrable. Dual piston Brembo callipers head a list of quality European components used, and rear disc brake adds to the stopping power. Well worth a test ride. (Tested as Yamaha Majesty T&G 2) & T&G 6.

Exactly the same as the Yamaha Maxster, the MBK badged Thunder is both a sporty scoot and conservative commuter. The 124kg weight is stopped by a disc brake at either end, and it handles pretty well. The Atlantic 125 shares name and similar design cues with its 500cc brother, but is a different beast. Powered by a Piaggio Leader motor the down scaled scoot looks cuter than the original, space under the seat for one and half lids, adjustable pre-load rear suspension, and three linked disc brakes for stability.

Beta have done a good job styling a machine with a bare headset and a little legshield mounted screen. The four-stroke engine, supplied by Kymco, performs well in good conditions, the Eikon does not like a headwind or steep incline. The seat and dash have been modified from the 50, but the former offers little rider comfort. The reduced OTR price is further softened by a two year warranty. Tested T&G 14.
