The larger capacity C1 was built to meet owners’ requests apparently. The extra ccs over the learner version provide extra pulling power up hills and easier overtaking on the motorways. People will buy the C1 just for that badge. Three different versions are available with different spec levels. No longer produced but still available in showrooms. Tested T&G 6.

Aprilia squeezed a bigger motor into their smart-but-sluggish Leonardo 125, and created a more gutsy machine that is useful for open road aswell as townwork. The upright seating position of the Leonardo is preferable if you do much heavy traffic work, but on the down-side, the underseat storage compartment will only take one full-face helmet. Aprilia offer a two year warranty in the price. Various insurance deals subject to status, check details with local stockist. Tested T&G 3.

Same spec. as their 125 but with the 180 motor from the Joyride. Due to the lighter chasis expect acceleration to be very good with an impressive top speed. Twin shocks help to make the longer journeys bearable. Ideal for those with a longer commute on more open roads. Tested T&G 32.

The latest edition to the X9 family, now powered by Piaggioís own Quasar motor. With the same cosmetics as its 125 and 500 siblings. The twin pistoned front and single rear brakes are an improvement over the earlier models. Twin rear shocks and larger rear wheel help to make this a more comfortable, well mannered upgrade. The features include odometer, clock, temperature gauge, service indicator and distance travelled on reserve tank.

Piaggio's flagship scooter has had a few modifications for 2004, such as fuel injection, sturdier forks and relocating the indicators to the back of the mirrors. The PICS comms system, adjustable screen and electric stand are still standard fittings. Braking has been uprated also, but price remains the same so making it good value for its classification.

Sym’s Joyride was re-badged as a Laverda by Aprilia to relaunch the famous Italian brand in its home nation, so it should be and indeed is a good bit of kit. Praised by all members of T&G staff who have so far ridden it, features include twin adjustable rear shocks, centre and side stands, back rest, 40-litre underseat storage and alloy wheels. The motor is a 180cc four-valve four-stroke liquid-cooled engine that claims 14.5bhp (approx), and braking is courtesy of a rim mounted front disc combined with an traditional rear. A well spec’d scoot at a competitive price that should put a few major companies to shame. Tested T&G 13.

Favourite 150 offers a slightly larger four-stroke motor than its stable-mate, but they share the side and centre stands, helmet bay, a glove box inside the legshields, and a rear rack. The design is swoopy in a pleasant kinda way, and the pillion half of the saddle lifts for storage access. De-Luxe version includes a small screen and remote electronic alarm. Tested T&G Issue No.10.
