The slightly bigger brother by 25cc, the Eikon 150 has the grunt to make it that little bit faster - as it should do. This in turn makes it quite nice and it should pull 70mph quite happily. Engine aside, it’s exactly the same as the 125 version which means it comes with a two year warranty and a recent price reduction.

The new Sprint version may not be as roomy as its predecessor but its enhanced urban ability more than compensates. For my money this is the most stylish and enjoyable application of a 460cc Master engine for inter-urban use so far. Priced at £4349 the Sprint rates as one of the cheaper maxi-scooters and is targeted head-to-head with Piaggio’s X9 500. While the Sprint may not have as many gadgets as the Piaggio, it is the more rewarding ride.

‘Sports Utility’ scooter from MBK. ‘All new’ 300cc four-stroke motor based on the Yamaha 250 lump, in actual fact the 264cc engine doesn’t actually give any more grunt than it’s based on. Weighing in at 164kg the non-cruiser design of the Kilibre together with an upright riding position should help it cut through rush-hour jams like a knife through hot butter.

A new model from Malaguti which draws on the styling of their F12 Phantom but with the additional features needed to compete in this market. Larger wheels, screen and frame along with an under seat storage space for two helmets will help it to win sales. The engine is from Piaggio’s GT. The only downside would seem to be the price. But it does include two year waranty and one year’s roadside assistance.

A very competitively priced 250. The Ego uses Kymco’s liquid cooled four-stroke engine. The final result is a large, comfortable machine with a good spec, which has fine handling if not the fastest engine of the 250 class. The only down-side is a tight helmet bay but includes free third party or subsidised TPF&T insurance.

No longer produced, but still available in some dealers, the Piaggio B500 comes equipped with the 500cc electronic injection Piaggio MASTER engine along with large diameter wheels, 3 disc integral braking system and a front fork of 41 mm for excellent road holding. Other standard features include an immobiliser, socket to recharge a mobile phone, fold-away seat cover and central locking button.
