A fine looking cheapie from Sym that’s looks and feels sturdy enough to last the pace. Based on their old Shark scoot the Euro MX also features a rim-mounted front disc brake. It’s basic but it has everything from helmet bay to curry hook, and suggests great VFM for the commuter wanting a 125 for less than two grand. Tested T&G 18.

Honda’s radical two-stroker Pantheon has been replaced by an all new fuel injected four-stroke machine that retails at a very reasonable price indeed. Avant Garde styling, a nippy motor, good storage, linked hydraulic discs, and an overall Honda’ness’ certainly add to the appeal. It seems now far more people can afford, and indeed desire this reputable brand.

From Fosti in China comes the FT125-20 which bears a striking resemblance to the Kymco Spacer/Dink. Powered by a four-stroke engine with a disc brake at the front (rear drum operated by floor pedal), it also boasts a remote control start and an alarm/immobiliser. This scoot comes with a 12 months or 6000km warranty.

A Chinese scooter that undercuts all in its class, in fact this is the only 125cc scooter out of China that is liquid cooled. Not a bad looking scooter. Top box is standard as is an alarm.

Think Elystar, but take away the ABS and fuel injection. Replace with carburettor and a fine pair of normal discs and you can have the advantage of £300 in your pocket. Comes with the advantage of Peugeot’s immobiliser, boa lock.

The C1 has been shown to be safe enough for most countries to sanction its use without a helmet. Not here though, where it loses its main attraction. People will buy the C1 just for that badge. If you were cruel you could say that this is Kymco’s first really nice looking scooter. Uses Kymco’s liquid-cooled four-stroke, but has to pull 128kg so performance is relaxed rather than sporty. A large, comfortable machine with good spec and fine handling. Down-sides: tight helmet bay and mediocre price. Upside: 0%, 2 year finance package.

The smart-looking SYM Shark brings the Taiwanese manufacturer 125 offerings up to date in technology terms. The four-stroke engine boasts reasonable performance. The flashy rim-mounted disc brake works fine, as well as looking trick. A rear disc brake (Shark 125R) has been added. With a flat floor and fair sized helmet bay the Shark is practical enough.
